Traveling the Superhighway by Michael Ashbourne
A web-page is a web-page is a web-page. But it is not the destination that matters, it is how you get there. Would you rather travel the internet superhighway in a Porsche or in a 1998 Civic? Now what if I told you you can travel the internet in a free Porsche. Now you are listening.
I want to take a minute to take a look at the different choices you have on your Mac with regards to using the internet. Believe it or not, there are a lot of options to get you to your favorite web page. For me, though, it comes down to only two choices: Safari or Firefox. So I am going to take a little time and look at both, and in the end it will be up to you which you ultimately choose to meet your internet needs.
Safari is the browser that comes standard with your Mac. It is robust, safe, and ultimately designed by Apple, so by nature it is good. They have just released a new beta version, Safari 3. According to Apple, this version is the fastest and most secure web browser on the internet. I have tried it and find it to be lightning fast.
I find making and organizing your bookmarks in Safari to be the easiest and most straightforward. It requires you only to push a small plus button and boom, the page is bookmarked. Another great feature is the ability to drag a tabbed window off the page and it opens in a new window. To put it simply, I find that for new computer users, I would recommend you sticking with Safari. It is very simple and easy to use.
My personal web browser of choice is Firefox. Back in the days when I still used a PC, it was the only option, in my opinion. When I made the switch to a Mac, it only made sense that I would use Firefox. If you are on a PC right now, I cannot stress how much you need to use Firefox over Internet Explorer. Firefox will simply blow Internet Explorer out of the water when you use it. It is infinitely more secure, and noticeably faster than Internet Explorer.
Some of the features of Firefox that I love:
- The integrated easy to use tabbed browsing.
- The infinite free add-ons that enhance your internet experience.
- The simple layout that makes it easy to adjust any setting and tweak
it so it is just right for you.
- The number one reason: Firefox is FREE.
Comparing the two, they both get you to a web page quickly and securely. I think Safari is great if what you want is just internet. If you want a little more customization and tweaking ability, give Firefox a try.
Try Firefox for a week and see what you think. It is currently set at the perfect price: Free.
